Douchebag of the Week (Mar. 28-Apr. 3)
With news that Chicago’s 2009 homicide rate was 21 percent lower than it was at the same time one year ago, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis made a rather interesting comment this past Friday:
“Sometimes you have to sit back and pull yourself away from the rhetoric and look at the hard facts, and that’s what I would ask people to do — just judge us on the facts.”
Right you are, our flexing federal friend. Let’s have a look at some of the facts:
- Officer William Cozzi pled guilty in Cook County criminal court to charges of misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to 18 months probation, but the day before he was supposed to return duty he wound up being charged with federal civil rights violations—due mostly to the matter having been referred to the FBI by their former employee.
- Perceived “Double Jeopardy” incident with Cozzi continued speculation about “low morale” and eventually resulted in Weis becoming only the second superindendent in recent memory to receive a no-confidence vote from rank-and-file officers.
- Oh, and then there’s the report coming out of the monthly awards ceremony for officers that went above and beyond the call of duty … which Weis—for one reason or another—couldn’t show up for.
We won’t hold our breath waiting to exhale with Weis’ recent statement that “if he ever learned that he personally was responsible for lowering the morale in the department, he would be the first to go.”
As long as he’s still in charge in the Windy City, we will continue to hold our breath only because Weis has the pungent odor of an overflowing douchebag.
